I was one of the night crew that shredded newspaper for the bird cages in the huge UC bindery that was donated for the rescue effort.  As this was the first time that any kind of bird rescue on this scale had ever been done, it was strictly a “learn as you go” situation.  Many of the birds died, but I seem to remember one seagull who did survive.  The building was kept semi-dark at night, and usually there were only a few of us there.  I think there were one or two people on bird watch, that is moving among the many, many cages on an area which was several steps above where we were tearing up newspapers.  And I remember heat lamps on the birds and perhaps electric heaters, although I am not sure of the latter.
